When you logon to your computer, you might see the "Energy Star" logo. Do you know what that means to you?
ENERGY STAR is a joint cooperative program from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Its intended purpose is to help consumers save money and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in an effort to protect the environment. ENERGY STAR accomplishes their goals by providing a standard to commercial enterprise for the development of energy efficient products and practices.
In 1992 the EPA created ENERGY STAR as a voluntary labeling program for manufacturers to identify and promote energy-efficient products. Computers and computer monitors were the first products to carry the ENERGY STAR logo. The EPA partnered with the US Department of Energy to co-join the ENERGY STAR logo with additional product categories, in 1996. Since its inception, the ENERGY STAR certification has been extended to office equipment, residential heating and cooling equipment, major appliances, lighting, home electronics, new homes, as well as commercial and industrial buildings. ENERGY STAR now represents a well-trusted standard that is utilized on over 50 home and office product categories, which does include thousands of product models.
